Professional photographers spend a relatively small amount of their time actually shooting pictures. Most professional photographers (at least photographers without production managers), would say that the majority of their time is spend on work that needs to be done after the actual l shoot.
By making this process more efficient and not doing things that do not need to be done, a photographer can take on more jobs and spend more time doing what most photographers most enjoy - taking pictures. The following is a list of ways that a photographer can accomplish this goal:
1. Working on getting your lighting and coloring correct during the shoot. A vast amount of time is spent correcting these errors during the actual shooting. Purchase any equipment you might need to improve. Color correction is rather dull work. Eliminate as much of it as you possibly can.
2. Create scripts or write macros for the work you do. You can write scripts which open and close all the needed programs, folders and documents you will need to perform your work. Write a script to open create all of the folders you will need, or to post the completed images onto your website. There are programs available that make scripting easy. You don't have to be a programming professional to accomplish this work.
3. Take fewer pictures. If you are a photographer who shoots 1000 images in a 45 min session, you will be spending an enormous amount of time on reviewing and choosing the 30 best that you want to present to your client. Remember, you want repeat clients. You don't want to take every pose of you can think of. By selecting a few poses, you can later send an email saying that you really liked how their images came out and that here are a few poses you'd like to try on their next shoot. Not only will you be encouraging them to spend money on another shoot with you, you will be making their decision process less overwhelming and reducing the number of images you will need to sort through. Cut your images down to 500 and you will save at least an hour on image review and selection.
By following these steps, a photographer can decrease the amount of time she spends on post production and spend more time on the things she really enjoys - taking pictures!
