Photographer Offers Tips on How to Pose Newborns

In this article an Orange County Photographer offers tips on making shooting newborns easier.

The following consists of some thoughts to keep in mind when working with newborns.

1.       Remember the newborn is the boss. When he needs to stop to nurse or be changed, you need to stop and make sure those things are done.

2.       Remember when you are taking pictures of mom and the baby that mom just had a baby. This means that likely has a bit of a belly. Anything you can do to make sure that belly is not emphasized will please your clients.

3.       Try getting shots of mom, dad and baby with their faces together.

4.       Take several shots with baby and mom together and then shots with baby and dad together and then shots of just baby.

5.       When having your clients kiss the baby, make sure they don’t pucker. It looks unnatural.

6.       If the baby gets at all fussy, give him a pacifier. Let him suck on the pacifier until you are ready to shoot. As soon as he is ready to shoot pop out the pacifier and take your shot.  Even when a baby is fussy, you should be able to get one or two non-fussy shots in with this method.

7.       One fun pose to create with a newborn is to have mom sit on the ground hold the newborn up right and leaning against her chest. Then halve dad sit or kneel behind and above mom and wrap his arms around her arms which are holding up the baby. This pose gives you a beautiful shot that looks to symbolize a mom protecting the baby and the day protecting both mom and the baby.

8.       Another fun shot is to have dad lay on his back with his eyes closed. Then lay the baby down with his face down on dads back. This creates a beautiful shot that represents a baby and his potential to become like his dad. It is a beautiful and popular pose.

Taking pictures of newborns is not always the easiest thing in the world to do; however by following these tips you will find that it becomes easier and more rewarding.
