Wedding veils for the young bride

When the bride is “given away” by her father her face is covered by a veil. 

Wedding veils are said to have originated in Ancient Rome. It was a belief that the bride would be subjected to attacks by evil spirits. To prevent any harm befalling her she often wore a face veil. The veil also is a symbol of purity. In certain cultures where there are arranged marriages the bride is not shown to the groom until the transaction of the dowry and whatever other matters are complete. Until then wedding veils are used to cover the faces of the brides. It is interesting to note that once the ceremony is over and the wedding veils are lifted by the grooms it shows the dominance of the man over the woman. But there are some situations where the brides themselves remove their own wedding veils. This is a symbol of independence and also that she is on equal level of the man.

While white or shades of white is the traditional colour of wedding veils, ancient Greece brides wore wedding veils of yellow and those of ancient Rome wore red.

Wedding veils are available in a rage of styles. One tier wedding veils fall from the head up to the desired length in one piece. The edges could be delicately embroidered or left as a cut edge or maybe a very thin pencil edge.

As the name suggests two tired wedding veils are in two layers and the three tiered wedding veils are cut in three layers. Here too the length is at the discretion of the bride.

Most wedding veils fall from a head dress of flowers, pearls or a tiara placed on the brides head. The wedding veils could be further accentuated with beautifully patterned bead edges. The edges of the wedding veils could also be edged with thin satin ribbon or corded in a design.

There is also a style known as bird cage wedding veils. This is a style where the bride does away with the traditional veil and uses a veil like a small cap.

The mantilla wedding veils are worn over the head and to the desired length. They are beautifully lace edged and are very elegant. Wedding veils could also be custom made to suit the bride.

The wedding veil is part of the total picture of the bride, As such the veil cannot be thought of in isolation but in comparison with the bride and the gown. Add to the romance in the air with a beautifully chosen wedding veil.
