This way, you can save yourself the trouble of considering a home that may need too many repairs and not be a good investment for you to make. As you walk around the property, you want to check the foundation for any cracks, leaks and lopsidedness. This means that you need to look closely at all of the baseboards and ceilings. Pay special attention to the basement if there is one. Many times, the first signs of a foundation that is in need of repair are found in the basement walls and floors. You are looking for any signs of moisture and leakage. Don't be too concerned if you see tiny cracks, as they are usually just signs of settling, which is something that most homes for sale go through.

When you are in the basement, you need to make sure there is proper drainage. There must be a sump pump and drains that allow the foundation to drain properly if there is an overabundance of rain or melting snow. This will prevent your basement from experiencing any flooding and help to prevent water damage or damage to the home's foundation. Also, find out if the home has a crawl space.
