Convert WMV to AVI in a Snap

What is WMV, and why is it necessary to convert WMV to AVI? WMV or Windows Media Video is a video compression format developed and controlled by Microsoft. It is a generic name for Microsoft's video encoding solutions.

I took video clip of my mom’s 75th birthday occasion with my miniDV video camera. I stored the video in my notebook computer with the help of Windows Movie Maker. So now it is in WMV format. Then I burned a back-up on a DVD-R, which i posted to my sister who resides abroad. She tried to watch the video clip with her Panasonic DVD player, but it was not playing. The DVD player just flashed a “disc error” signal. If you’ve had this experience, probably it’s high time for you to find out how to convert video files, specially convert WMV to AVI.

Or perhaps you might have downloaded videos in your Windows Mobile powered gadgets - Microsoft Zune, Xbox 360 System, etc. - and you just want to play these on your old Pioneer DVD player. Shortly after making the files on storage disk, you see that the WMV format is not compatible with your DVD player. Again, a WMV to AVI conversion could be in order.

What the heck is WMV, and why is it required to convert WMV to AVI? WMV or Windows Media Video is usually a video data compresion format formulated and controlled by Microsoft. It is a universal name for Microsoft’s video encoding solutions. Initially it was used for web streaming and downloading contents. Earlier versions were based on MPEG-4 Part 2 but the latest version (WMV10) makes use of Microsoft’s own video encoding technologies instead. It is built to be compatible with Windows Media for playback and file management functions. Microsoft claims that the most recent version of WMV offers better data compresion ratio that MPEG-4. WMV is compatible with Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, MPlayer, The KMPlayer, Media Player Classic and VLC Media Player. For Mac users, it is a 3rd party Flip4Mac, which allows Mac users playing WMV files using QuickTime. While Linux users can depend on MPlayer and MEncoder for WMV playback.

Sadly, several standalone DVD players, specially the older models, don't identify WMV. At this time, the more widely used format is AVI. AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave. It is a container format created by Microsoft for Windows multimedia framework. But compared to WMV and MPEG-4, AVI is a much older data format that does not have some capabilities found in modern containers. Having said that, it is still supported in Windows and well suited for DV. One benefit of AVI is that it can be made with no data compresion. The implication with this uncompressed AVI is that you don't have loss of quality from the input video to your saved file. Needless to say the result is an extremely large file size.

If you’d stop and think about it, you’ll come to the realization that technology is making life more technical for us. Couldn’t the WMV been designed backward compatible so that it can still be recognized by my old Pioneer DVD player and your not so recent Panasonic unit? That would mean that it won't be essential to convert WMV to AVI. Likely this is what they mean by planned obsolescence. After a few years, our gadgets isn't going to be suitable with present-day technologies. This will compel us to get the latest intuitive gadgets. Yes, these may well be more feature-laden. But do we need to have all those features in the first place? And what if our old devices are still very functional, just like my sister’s Pioneer machine and also your Panasonic player? And this is done for the sake of business profits. So what can the regular buyer do? If we don't select the upgraded device, our only recourse would be to convert our WMV to AVI.
