One of the main things you need to do is destroy their nest.  However, you certainly should not just walk up to it and knock it down.  You will be risking life and limb if you do so, since they will defend their nest with all their might.

It is best for you to use an aerosol spray designed to knock down the nest.  You will need to read the instructions on the spray can carefully before using it.  It is best for you to stay as far back as possible to minimize your risk of getting stung.

Another way you can get control of bees and wasps is to use pesticide inside the nest.  This works especially well with mud daubers, carpenter bees, and cicada killers.  Carpenter bees particularly like building nests in wood, so you can help prevent re-infestation by painting the wood.

You should also know bees mainly feed on pollen and nectar.  However, they may be attracted to the sugar provided by soft drinks and sweet foods.  You will want to cover up your food and garbage cans to keep from attracting them.

Wasps may also be interested in human sweets and can be even more aggressive than bees.  The best time to get rid of wasps is in the early spring before the queen has had a chance to increase the population of the colony too much.

You may want to consider waiting until night to eradicate wasp nests.  This is when most of them will be at home and not out working.  They will also be less willing to fly when there is not a source of light readily available.  This does not mean you will not be stung however since you certainly still can.

If the bees or wasps are not bothering you, then you may want to consider just leaving them along.  They usually do not bother humans unless you bother them.  However, if they are too near your residence, you will certainly want to destroy them as quickly as possible.

If you cannot easily get to the nest, then you should not risk getting stung.  You should simply call up a pest control service and let them handle the problem for you.
