Calcatta marble is polished. Its sawing direction is vein cut. A product of Italy, the Calacatta, its commercial name, is a unique piece of stone. It can present itself with color and structure variations.

The calacatta stone is identified with luxury. Among the first individuals to bring this precious marble to this era was Michelangelo. The stone offers in various veining and shapes. Marbles have been valued for their natural elegance and beauty since the ancient civilization.

Calacatta, being a type of stone, is a popular choice for stone furniture, wall cladding, fireplace surrounds, bathrooms, architectural panels. Calcatta is known to be lightweight, strong, and easy to work with.

The Calcatta marble is 20% of the weight of solid stone and has the natural stone facing. Its impact strength is 60 times greater than a 1 ¼-inch thick marble. A few of the finishes available are polished, score, hone, flamed, or sandblasted.

And because it is a marble, it is stable, does not warp like most of solid 3cm stones. It is also tested to stand against the 400 psf wind load capacity, acid-rain, freeze-thaw, and seismic racking. The marble is also proven to have an excellent performance in all climates and enhances the building’s resistance from explosion.

For many years since civilization, people have been using marble to enhance the aesthetic appearance of a building, commercial or residential. Calcatta marble is used in stone elevator cladding, flooring, curtain walls, stone elevator floors, and waterfalls and fountains.

In specialty applications, manufacturers of yachts, airplanes, signage, and furniture also favor calacatta as among their marble options. The marble is ideal for most of marine applications because of its waterproof and salt spray resistance, corrosion resistance, non-combustible property, flexural strengths, and rich look of a natural stone.

When used in manufacturing yachts and cruise ships, calcatta increases the ship’s value. It is also very lightweight, around 80% less than the traditional stone. Some of the interior applications of this marble inside the cruise ships and yachts are wall panels, ceilings, balcony panels, corridors, signage, countertops and vanities, furniture, and table tops.

In commercial buildings, calcatta stone is used as curtain walls because it is similar to glass in weight, thin enough to work with most curtain wall manufacturer’s system. Designers, architect, and engineers agree that using calacatta marble in curtain wall is beneficial because it is dead load compared to thick stone slabs.

It is also resilient, flexible and safer as a cladding material than a common stone cladding. When accidental explosions occur, calacatta in a curtain wall serves as the protective envelope of the structure. It is the first line of defense in a bomb blast.

Calcatta marble is also fire safety. As opposed to solid stone cladding in which the stone panels shatter and break from the heat of intense fire, the lighter weight of calcatta limits the danger to firefighters.

Finally, calcatta marble allows the use of more insulation in the curtain wall, and thereby translates into real energy savings. Houses, apartment units, hotels and resortsFree Reprint Articles, and condominium use calcatta either as their exterior or interior material.
