There are many different types of parasites that can affect pets.  Some of them will only cause mild problems,Different Parasites Affecting Your Pets Articles while others can cause major problems up to and including death.  Here is a look at some of the most common types of parasites.

Fleas
Fleas are probably the most common type of parasite that gives dog and cat owners headaches.  They can cause pets to start itching severely which will prompt them to start biting, scratching, or chewing the affected area.  Some pets may be allergic or develop a hypersensitivity to flea saliva and experience even more problems.  Fleas can also transmit tapeworms which are common parasites themselves.

Ticks
The problem with ticks can range from mild irritation to the affected area up to pets developing severe anemia.  Ticks can also transmit diseases to pets as well as humans.  Lyme disease is the most well-known disease associated with ticks, but they can also transmit other diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever.  Ticks are large enough that you can spot them with the naked eye if you examine your dog closely.

Mites
Another type of parasite that affects pets is the mite.  Mites cause symptoms such as lesions, hair loss, itching, and oozing.  Some of these parasites can even affect people.  You certainly wouldn't want that to happen.

Heartworms
Mosquitoes are responsible for transmitting heartworms to pets by biting them.  These parasites cause problems in the heart and lungs, so you definitely wouldn't want your pet infected with them.  Unfortunately, the signs of a heartworm infection aren't very specific which is why they're commonly diagnosed later in the infestation.  These parasites can easily be detected with a blood test.  However, it's best to give your dog medication on a monthly basis to keep them at bay.

Other Worms
In addition to heartworms, there are three main other types of worms that can give pets problems.  They include hookworms, whipworms, and roundworms.  They migrate to the gastrointestinal tract and can lead to symptoms such as anemia and diarrhea.  They may also steal the nutrients from the food that your dog eats.

It is very easy for dogs to become infected with these worms.  Since their eggs are contained in feces , dogs can become infected by consuming feces.  Some of the parasites can infect puppies thanks to their mothers milk or placenta.  Roundworms are usually responsible for the mother that passes a parasite on to her pups.
