Failing to provide dogs with proper dental hygiene puts them at risk of developing a range of dental diseases.  Tartar can build up on the teeth and lead to decay.  Bacterial infections may also develop and start causing damage to the bones and gums in the mouth.  Periodontal disease is common in dogs with owners who pay no attention to their teeth.

Problems originating in the mouth may go on to create problems in other areas of your dog's body as well.  Infections of the teeth and gums may travel to other organs such as the kidneys, liver, heart, or brain.

The development of diseases is not the only potential problem your dog can have.  Their teeth may become chipped or cracked.  This will make it painful for them to eat.  Cracked or chipped teeth are also a good entry point for bacteria which can cause inflammation of deeper tissues in the mouth.

In order to prevent these oral problems, it is best for owners to take their dogs to the veterinarian on a regular basis.  Having the teeth professionally cleaned will help tremendously.  You should not wait around for a problem to develop before doing something about it.

The veterinarian will be able to remove bacteria and tartar which accumulates on the teeth.  These may even be building beneath the gumline.  The vet can even help your dog's teeth look better by polishing them as well.  In some situations, more advanced procedures are called for.

In addition to taking your dog to the vet regularly for dental examinations, you should brush his teeth on a daily basis.  If not on a daily basis, then brushing should be done at least a few times each week.  It is also important for you to feed your dog a well-balanced diet.  There are special treats on the market aimed atreducing the risk of oral problems in your dog, so you should consider using them too.

Unfortunately, many homeowners do not realize how important it is to take their dogs to the vet on a regular basis.  You should always treat your dog's teeth like you treat your own.  Provide an appropriate diet, regularly brush your dog’s teeth, and make regular visits to the vet.
