We used to see Hollywood shoot movies about history,How Hollywood branded movies of the last decade influenced our wardrobe Articles this is no secret. Furthermore, it is no secret that Hollywood will continue to shoot them. Over the previous decade we saw Hollywood take a stronger than usual interest in the 20th century. Most of the movies listed below won Oscars and other awards. Leading actresses oftentimes were so impressed by the characters they portrayed that they absorb their styles and made them their own.

Let’s remember the most popular movies of the past decade and track their influence on mainstream fashion.

“L.A. Confidential” won Oscars and awoke the 50’s inspired glamour thanks to Kim Bassinger’s rouged lips. After this movie there was a splash of interest in blonde waving curls. Even now long blonde hair, curled and waxed seems to be in the TOP 10 of all hair styles. There was a period when Shakira and Eva Mendez used this style in their career.

“Dogvill”. A serious drama of which Nicole Kidman was the star also had a wide influence on fashion trends. Nicole herself, as a TOP Red Carpet attendee, was admitted as a icon of the  new 30’s and 40’s inspired fashions. This famous movie was another one in her historical collection in which she had a profound influence on fashion styles.

“Batman”. I believe it’s quite clear that Batman remind us of 50’s inspired styles, despite the hi-tech all the high-tech graphics used in the movie. Classical nipped-in dresses plus classical 50’s inspired waves had a great deal of influence on many fashion collections which were on full display by the Red Carpet Divas in nice vintage styles on the first night.

“Chicago”.  All movies mentioned above, if taken together, didn’t have as much influence on fashion as this one. Shortly after this movie was debuted, fashionistas the world-over began copying 1920’s style dresses worn by Catherine Zeta Jones and Renée Kathleen Zellweger. And even to this day, Zellweger is often seen with a blunt curled bob. Furthermore, Chicago’s influence has carried forth to fashion designers now creating entire collections using styles of flapper dancers, jazz singers and Charleston dancers. This was the second big splash of interest towards the good ol’ 20’s- 40’s since “Cabaret” with Liza Minelli was released.

The second, and probably not last splash of 20’s-inspired interest, appeared after “Aviator”, starring Leonardo Dicaprio was released. With Chicago winning 6 Oscars and Aviator 5, the importance of both not lost on the keen observer. But the success of the movie wasn’t based only on Dicaprio’s charisma. Three of today’s most revered icons of style had roles in this classic. Cate Blanchett won an Oscar for Katharine Hepburn’s character, Kate Beckinsale also succeeded playing Ava Gardner and Gwen Stefani became Jean Harlow. The last diva became so immersed in her character that she made 30’s inspired curled bob and platinum blonde color her permanent calling card.  And so the 30’s and 40’s inspired vintage fashions got their new birth.

Newly released movies also promise the continued resurgence of historical orientated fashions and styles.

“The King’s Speech” forecast the new interest in the 20’s-40’s inspired styles. And Helena Bonham Carter in her role as The Queen’s Mother seems to be another icon of vintage inspired style. By the way, the sets and men’s fashions used in this film also an influence on newly released men’s collections.

“The First Avenger” seems to have paved the way for a re-birth to military pencil skirts as well as to flutter sleeve blouses.

“A Dangerous Method” starring Keira Knightley promised the second re-birth of titanic inspired dresses of the early 10’s-20’s. Knightley was always a slim and skinny icon of vintage inspired style, and it’s not surprising that her vintage themed style influenced the roles gets cast for in her movies. In turn, her roles have a tremendous influence on Red Carpet fashion and the subsequent fashion trends that follow.

It is often fun to look for tendencies, track main fashion streams and predict the coming ones. With that in mind, I have one last thing to say about on this subject and it is this: “film directors and screen writers” have more influence on modern trends than fashion stylists…
