In order to rank high for particular keyword, you need to show Google what keyword is that. That means that your content should be keyword rich. You have to put your keyword into title, meta tags, description... It's just like you are showing Google what you want to rank for.

Mistake #2: Unique Content

Having not enough content is another big mistake. Google wants to offer only high quality results to visitors. That's why you should put a lot of quality and unique content on your website. Google will notice that and you will be rewarded. Just keep updating your website on a regular basis and the result will come sooner or later.

Mistake #3: Backlinks

In order to increase your popularity among other websites, you need backlinks. You could see backlinks as a vote for your website. More backlinks gives you more votes, more votes makes your ranking in Google better. It's easy as that. Of course, this is very simplified.

Additionally, it would be good to put anchor text related to your keyword. That will boost your rankings for that specific keyword by a lot.
