Exercises To Do On Your Own Be careful what you pay attention to because you are going to get more of it. You can help people focus on what they do want by asking them the simple question, "What's good?" Time for Exercise: one minute Properties Required: none Steps: 1. The next time you greet someone, instead of usual greetings such as "How are you?" "How's it going?" "What's new?" ask "What's good?" 2. Suggest to everyone you know that they start asking others this simple question. Comments: If you pay attention to how people use language, you will notice that they often phrase responses in negative terms. For example, if you ask someone, "How are you today?" the most frequent response seems to be "Not bad." If you ask, "How is everything?" they might say, "It could be worse." When people talk about what they want, they often mention what they don't want. For example, "I sure hope I don't get that flu going around," or "I don't want to be sick," or "I don't want to be poor," or "I hope my husband is not fooling around on me." Generally your consciousness works to create more of what you pay attention to. When you pay attention to what you don't want, there is a good chance you are going to get not less but more of it. So pay attention to what you do want. For example, "I want to be healthy," or "I want to have lots of money," or "I want a relationship based on trust and commitment."
