Effortless Peak Performance TrainingAthletic performance is usually measured by such parameters as weight lifted to determine strength, seconds or minutes a certain distance is run to determine speed and overall time of a particular workout to determine endurance. Very little attention is spent measuring mental toughness because this parameter is not easily measured and consequently is very difficult to determine. We find that systematic training methods used to increase any one of the physical performance criteria are usually limited and constrained. The athlete will usually peak at a particular performance level and have great difficulty exceeding that level.Determination and good work ethics can only take athletic performance so far. At this juncture the athlete is left frustrated and wanting more but unable to achieve it. However, we know that physical ability is only one component of peak athletic performance. Numerous studies have shown that mental training accounts for the majority of an athlete’s peak performance ability. Yet this mental component remains one of the most neglected areas in athletic training. The Zone There are moments in life when our body and mind seem to be in perfect harmony. A moment of feeling really good! A moment that is actually quite rare and certainly not prolonged by most athletes when performing physical exercise. “The sweet spot” that I refer to is that point of perfection when you “whack” – play the perfect forearm volley in tennis, or “smack” the perfect drive down the fairway in golf or “stride” to the perfect “rhythm” while running or jogging. “Being in the zone” is remaining in this sweet spot for an extended period of time. It is when the mind and body are in harmony and operating at optimum synchronization and performance. Being “in the zone” is a desired goal of sports psychology coaching. It is defined as having a higher level of concentration and being totally engrossed in an endeavor to the point where time almost stands still and outside distractions seem to disappear. At some point, whether in sports or not, most people have experienced being so deep in concentration that outside distractions seem to totally disappear. Finding the mental “triggers” that help athletes enter the zone and learning to stay in the zone are the prerequisites for any successful athletic performance training program. With the proper training you can hit the “sweet spot” quickly and then stay “in the zone” for extended periods of time. Many test subjects have commented that they have actually reached a “body/mind meld” (their words, not ours) during their peak performance experiences. In Sports Psychology we study the application of the attitudes and behaviors of athletes (including team athletes) that impact (either positively or negatively) performance in sports and/or other competitive settings. The goal of sports psychology is to help athletes and teams identify unhealthy attitudes and beliefs, apply mental strength skills and peak performance strategies to perform at optimal levels. Mental Game Coaching (also known as mental toughness training) is the practical aspect of sports psychology. Mental toughness training helps athletes to work through mental barriers, such as confidence, concentration (focus), composure (control) and commitment-related issues. It requires replacing unhealthy attitudes and beliefs with more healthy ones to achieve peak performance in sports. Guess what? That’s exactly what the Yoga Awakening Meditation Collection does for you. Through the use of guided meditation exercises and specially designed training techniques you will attain a mental toughness that encompasses all of the criteria for peak athletic performance we’ve just discussed above and more. It’s truly remarkable that the application of Yoga and Meditation techniques are as far reaching as they are. To fully understand this, one only needs to observe an experienced practitioner in action, flowing from one extremely difficult Yoga posture to the next with ease, grace and composure. This observation speaks volumes for what’s possible when the human mind and body are melded together and working in perfect harmony.
