6 Nations Championship - An Event to Watch Out For!

The 6 Nations Championship is a Rugby Union event that is played once every year. It is an international competition that involves teams from six European countries, that is, England, France, Ireland, Italy,Scotland and Wales.

The last championship, held in 2008,was won by Wales. They were crowned the official winners after beating the rest of the teams and therefore, winning the Grand Slam and Triple Crown.

Before 2000, the 6 Nations Championship was known as the Five Nations Championship as Italy was not a part of the event at that time. It has also come to be known as the RBS 6 Nations due to sponsorship deals. A team that comes out as the victor in this event is also sometimes referred to as the European Champion.

Currently, England holds the record for most Grand Slam titles.  It has won a total of 12 Grand Slams followed closely by Wales with 10 wins.  Wales became current champions after beating France 29-12 in Cardiff. Looking at the result archives of 2000-2008 it is easy to see that France is heading the championship as they have won 33 of the 45 matches they have played so far. Ireland is second with 31 wins and England 3rd having won 30 of the 45 matches.

France has the honor of having been crowned as the champions 4 times, England thrice and Wales two times.  The 6 Nation rugby scores can be pretty unpredictable so I, for one, do not place my bets on past results. Anything is possible in the 6 Nations Championship.  Just when you dismiss a team, it may shock you with its amazing performance proving once again not to underestimate the underdog.

This year, the event will begin on 7th Feb 2009. The  fifth round matches will be played on 21st March,2009. The teams will be all out trying to go for a title that is much sought after.  The defending champion, wales, will be aiming for yet another feather in their cap and also to equal England's wins.  The 2007 champions, France, will try and be tough contenders for the title of European Champions.  France must have its' eyes on the cup this time instead of just recording match wins. England's team will not be left much far behind. Ireland, despite not being able to record any 6 Nation wins is still a strong competitor who refuses to go down easily. Stay on top of your game by receiving rugby union live scores on your favorite sports site on the internet.

I am truly hopeful that like every year the RBS 6 Nations Championship will prove to be a treat for its fans all across Europe and the rest of the world. The event promises its fans suspenseArticle Submission, thrill and passion. The game is wide open with possibilities for ea
