Electronic Cigarettes - A New Technology

Electronic Cigarettes are been appearing all over the internet and at convenience stores nationwide. These products are marketed as an alternative to smoking. They mimic cigarettes and smoking but deliver the "fix" in a non burning fashion. Brands like Smokeless Image, Green Smoke, and V2 Cigs use this a 2 this style or a slight variant. These 2 piece style electronic cigarettes have the atomizer built right into the cartridge to form one piece.

The Cartomizer

A cartomizer also referred to as a cartridge contains a ceramic cup, heating coil, microprocessor, and filler material. The filler material is used to hold around .75ml - 1ml of e-liquid. The e-liquid will wick onto the heating coil, providing an automatic feed of e-liquid ready to be vaporized. Cartomizers are made to be disposable. Once all the liquid in the cartomizer is used up simply toss it and pop on a new one.

The Battery

Batteries are the long portion of an electronic cigarette. They are normally rated at 240mAh and provide an average user around 250 "puffs" or "pulls" before the battery needs recharging.

So How Does It Work?

Once a fully charged battery and fresh cartomizer are connected by screwing them together, the user simple takes a "puff" on the cartomizer end and the magic happens. The microprocessor detects the "puff" and actives the heating coil. The coils gets hot enough to completely vaporize the e-liquid which provides "vapor" to the user.

What is E-Liquid?

E-Liquid is made from propylene glycol. This chemical is FDA approved and are also used in inhalers. Propylene Glycol is combined with flavoring and a small percentage of nicotine. The nicotine ranges from 6mg to 24mg or .06% to 2.4% nicotine.

This new technology is looking promising. Although it was released in 2008. It only recently start entering the major markets around 2010. It provides smokers with an alternative to tobacco cigarettes and according to studies like IVAQS, ClearstreamScience Articles, and CASSA it is proving to be a much safe option.
