:: OPGW stands for what?
OPGW,What Is OPGW Fiber? Articles or OPTGW cables stand for Optical Ground Wire and they are a type of overhead optical fiber cable. OPGW cables are usually installed on normal voltage and extra high voltage power lines. This type of cable has two functions: Ground Wire and providing a communication link for the transmission of voice, video or data by incorporating optical fibers into the cable. It is used in the construction of electric power transmission and distribution lines.
OPGW fiber cables are used to replace conventional ground wire of old power lines with increasing fiber communications function.
:: The Structure of a OPGW Cable
An OPGW cable contains a tubular structure with one or more optical fibers in it, surrounded by layers of steel and aluminum wire.
:: Where is OPGW Cable Installed
The OPGW cable is installed between the tops of high-voltage electricity pylons. The conductive part of the cable serves to bond adjacent towers to earth ground, and shields the high-voltage conductors from lightning strikes. The optical fibers in the cable are used for transmission of data.
:: Advantages of OPGW Cable
Overhead fiber optic cable systems play a key role in telecommunications networks. Due to the fact that no civil works are required and the rights of way have already been established, it is possible to minimize costs and, most importantly, the time required to begin network operation.

:: Other Types of Overhead Optical Fiber Cables
1) Self-supporting cables (ADSS). Self-supporting optical cable system for all types of lines: electric lines, overhead distribution lines for railways, etc.
2) Lashed fiber optic cables. Optical cables lashed to the ground wire or the phase cable on the electric lines.
3) OPPC cables. Composite optical phase cables, for high voltage electric lines up to 135 kV.
