A Must Not Miss Excursion In Barcelona: A Sagrada Familia Tour

A Sagrada Familia tour is just one of the many things to do while on excursion in Barcelona. Learn why this basilica is one of the city's most famous.

No excursion in Barcelona is complete without a visit to one of the city's most famous churches -- the Sagrada Familia. A tour of this facility can fill you with inspiration and this famous church should be on every Barcelona tour. Before you go, learn a little bit about the church and what you can expect to learn while there. You might be surprised to find out that construction is still on going, over 100 years since it was started.

A History Of The Sagrada Familia

The church has a rich history that dates back to the late 1800s. Although its design is famously attributed to Antoni Gaudi, he was not the one responsible from the very beginning. The inspiration was from Josep Maria Bocabella after he visited the Vatican in 1872 and Francisco de Paula del Villar was the initial architect until he retired in 1883. After that, Gaudi took over the design and much of what visitors see on a Sagrada Familia tour is Gaudi's own vision.

Although the project has been in process for more than 100 years, construction is still ongoing today. Current estimates anticipate that the construction will be completed around 2026. Visitors on a Sagrada Familia tour will be able to see newly constructed stonework right alongside older portions of the basilica.

What You'll See

While there, visitors can visit the Crypt, Nave and the Passion and Nativity Towers. The basilica also has a museum and shop. Gaudi himself is buried in the crypt and visitors can pay homage to the basilica's mastermind.

The Nativity tower is dedicated to the birth of Jesus. It is ornately decorated with symbolist figures such as turtles and chameleons and every part of the tower represents something. Gaudi meant for this to be the first place visitors saw upon entering and guests are often blown away by the detail in the carvings. Originally, the many statues were to be painted in a vibrant array of colors so that everything appeared alive, but currently everything is in its natural stone hue.

Alternatively, the Passion tower is plain with harsh carvings that resemble a skeleton and represent the sin of man. Construction didn't begin until 1954, well after Gaudi's death, but the architects and sculptors used his drawings and instructions to make his vision a reality. The towers are dramatic and were intended to highlight the brutality of the crucifixion.

After Your Sagrada Familia Tour

Although visitors can spend nearly all day visiting the church, this isn't the only excursion in Barcelona worth exploring. No Barceonla tour is complete without a trip to the city's Gothic Quarter, a visit to local tapas bars, or a trip to the beach. The city is also known for being especially bike friendly so many visitors choose to take an entire Barcelona tour on bicycle.

Although the Sagrada Familia is one of the most famous things to do in BarcelonaScience Articles, there are many other activities great for travelers. Dust off that passport and choose an excursion in Barcelona that's right for you.
