Barcelona is famous for its fabulous architecture, its shopping and unique atmosphere, but what about the kids? Unlike many major cities, there is a wealth of activities for younger people to enjoy.
Fishy Fun
The Aquarium, in Port Vell, offers more than 11,000 sea creatures to see. Its Oceanarium, the only one of its kind in Europe, features a fantastic transparent tunnel, through which visitors can stroll as if they were taking a walk along the ocean bed, taking in everything from sea anemones to huge sharks. Elsewhere, mini aquaria allow visitors the chance of a close-up view of smaller sea creatures which have adapted in astounding ways to their surroundings.
Animal Action
Barcelona’s central park, the Parc de la Ciutadella, is a fabulous area to visit. Its highlight is undoubtedly the fabulous zoo. First opened in 1892, the zoo is home to more than 4,000 animals from 400 species. Here, visitors can see gorillas and dolphins as well as many exotic reptiles and tropical birds. The zoo offers a host of activities for a great day out. The miniature train takes visitors around the area, or you can hire an electric buggy. Pony rides are available, as well as many activities for younger children, such as the infant zoo. There are many restaurants and bars to relax in, too. The rest of the beautiful park should not be missed, with its beautifully landscaped gardens and stunning monuments.
All Aboard
The best way to see the city is by tour bus. Its many attractions are quite far from each other, and tackling a tour on foot will be hard on younger feet. The hop-on, hop-off bus is an ideal way to see the sights, either viewing from the open top, or getting off to visit your chosen destination. The commentary provided means that there’s no planning or research to be done in advance and the whole family will find this a great way to relax and enjoy the city.
The Cubist Genius
Children may dread the prospect of visiting museums, but Barcelona’s Picasso Museum is sure to keep even the youngest entertained. The artist lived here for ten years and kept up an association with the city for the rest of his life. The museum offers events throughout the year, with workshops aimed at younger visitors. Among the exhibits on display are not only Picasso’s paintings but also sculptures and ceramic works. Children will leave the museum with a sense of wonder at the artist, which they will carry with them for as long as they live.
Having a Splashing Time
In contrast to the bustle and congestion of the city, Barcelona’s beaches are a calm delight. The closest to the city, Barceloneta, is a 20-minute walk from Las Ramblas, but a Metro station is close by. The beaches are also home to some interesting architecture, plus many bars and restaurants in which to recuperate after a hard day’s relaxation. All along the four beaches, there is much for the whole family to enjoy, from windsurfing and kite surfing to snorkelling, or just splashing about in the blue Mediterranean Sea.
