Choosing a Fishing Charter: Things To Look For

One of the most exciting things to do for a fisherman on vacation is to find a good fishing charter and cast a line where the fish are biting. Unless you have a sixth sense for this type of thing, however, you’re unlikely to know just where that sweet spot is. That’s where a good captain can help you out.

One of the most exciting things to do for a fisherman on vacation is to find a good fishing charter and cast a line where the fish are biting. Regardless of where you go for your trip, there is bound to be some water around somewhere. And in that water will be some prime spots for casting that line. Unless you have a sixth sense for this type of thing, however, you’re unlikely to know just where that sweet spot is. That’s where a good captain can help you out.

The first thing you need to figure out is whether you want to go on a group boat or get one that is just for you. There are advantages to both, so it may come down to your budget and your personal preferences. Obviously, a one on one fishing charter is going to be more expensive—all other things being equal. However, with that price tag you’ll get personal attention that you wouldn’t have otherwise been privy to. Not to mention the fact that you’ll more or less have the fish to yourself. On a group boat, you’ll have some built in company, which could make for a more enjoyable trip for those who like to socialize. But you’ll have to share the sport with your group mates.

Decide what you want from your fishing charter. If you are taking your entire family on the trip, you may want more than just good fishing. Your kids or wife could get bored waiting around for you to pull your haul, if they aren’t as taken with the sport as you are. You might want to look for boats that offer other forms of entertainment like swimming and snorkeling. Some high tech boats may even have DVDs and other forms of technology for everyone to enjoy. On the other hand, you may just want a pure fishing experience and nothing more. This will be easier to come by.

The most important part of choosing a fishing charter is finding a good captain. It doesn’t take much to get your chartering license. You don’t have to prove your expertise in the local fisheries or anything. Therefore, not all captains are created equal. They live and die on their reputations, which you should go out of your way to research. The internet, of course, makes this easier than ever before. Hit up some local online message boards and see what people are saying. You’ll know soon enough who is respected and who isn’t. Make your decisions accordingly.
