Holiday packages are great - they offer the traveler a chance to take inexpensive trips to foreign lands and many of the packages available these days are ridiculously cheap compared to a customized self-booked vacation. The travel agents can save you a bundle by creating these all-inclusive offers that are low cost because they can buy up flights and hotel rooms in bulk - it’s really hard to compete with some of the deals that they can provide.
The only problem is that these destinations are often going to be a little boring if they are set in typical tourist areas, and though some people won’t care whether or not they get to soak up some exotic culture as long as they can soak up the sun’s rays and get a chance to lounge about for a week without having to hop trains or book reservations in different restaurants or hotels, while other folks will go stir-crazy after even a couple of days in luxurious but somewhat bland surroundings.
The trick is to use the package as a jumping-off point. There’s no rule stating that you must spend all your time at a given resort or hotel provided in the package - but you can take full advantage of the cheap flight and the rooms, while perhaps taking day trips out of the tourist area or even booking a night or two in another hotel in a more interesting, or at least different, location.
For instance, a package that books you a flight to southern Portugal and rooms in one of the Algarve hotels can end up being so reasonable over all (especially in the off-season), that you may be able to afford to rent a car and drive an hour or north into the sparsely populated, but beautiful and comparatively inexpensive, Alentejo region.
