Grand Canyon Skywalk and the Price of Admission

No visit to Las Vegas is complete without a trip to the Grand Canyon Skywalk. Compared to the price of other Vegas attractions, the bridge is a consummate bargain. But only if you buy the right package.

I've been covering the Skywalk for a long time, and I'll be the first to acknowledge that figuring out how much it costs can be a bit of a enigma. I've just investigated prices and they've changed again! But in a good way.

The last price update simplified costs. It was an unfathomable mish-mash before. Here's where things stand now:

Hualapai Legacy Package

$43.05 per person

These prices encompass all taxes and fees.

The Packages

My thought is that if you make it out to Grand Canyon West, you've got to do the Glass Bridge. To be fair, there are many people who are content to stand at the West Rim and relish the majestic views. Luckily, there's a package deal for all kinds of visitors. Here's a quick breakdown:

Hualapai Legacy Package

This choice does not include the Glass Bridge. It does give you unrestricted access to the Park, wherein you can use the free shuttle bus to see the Native American Village, the Hualapai Ranch, Eagle Point and Guano Point.

Legacy Silver Package

Same as the Hualapai Legacy option but comes with a BBQ lunch and a $5 gift shop coupon.

Legacy Gold Package

The best for last! Comes with unlimited access to the glass walkway, plus everything in the Silver Package,

Location, Location, Location

The Glass Bridge makes for a great outing from Vegas. It's only 120 away from Las Vegas. You can drive yourself there but realize that the last 10 miles to the rim are on rough unpaved dirt road. Lease a sport utility vehicle with four-wheel-drive. Or book a excursion and hand over the logistics to a skilled guide (at the time of writing, there are reports that GPS units are inaccurately supplying directions to the rim).

Grand Canyon Sky Walk from Sin City

I've run the numbers on driving yourself to this attraction and it's too high (insurance, SUV rental, gas, parking, Park fee, etc.). Trips from Sin City are by far the most inexpensive. There are lots from which to choose:

Chopper

It takes a heli less than an hour to reach the rim. Plans range from just the Glass Walkway to flying 4,000 feet to the base and boating down the Colorado River (my personal favorite).

Plane

Planes take about 30 minutes and are the best way to get there. Includes same side-trips that are available with chopper tours.

Coach

Perfect for budget travelers. Takes 2.5 hours to get to the rim. Be prepared to devote half a day or more on this excursion (it's worth it!). Same add-ons that come with helicopter rides.

Getting There is Half the Fun

The great thing about Las Vegas trips to Grand Canyon West is the journey over. Highlights include Lake Mead, the largest man-made reservoir in the nation, historic Hoover Dam (spectacular from the air; bus tours include a photo stop), the new Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge, the Colorado River, Black Canyon, and an ancient stand of Joshua Tree forest.

The Best Deals? Book Online

If you self-drive, there are no deals. You turn up at Grand Canyon West and you pay fixed prices. Trips are a different story. The Glass Walkway is very popular and travel agents in most cases are getting full price. Don't be that person. Shop the Web. There are some awesome offers on the Web. I personally use a agent who saves me up to 35 percent It's a fact that tour operators and brokers publish their very best prices online. Make sure to apprise yourself of them.
