Family vacations can be fun memory makers and staying in rentals instead of hotels is a good way to make memories.

Family vacations are about more than where you go or what you do when you get there--they are about making memories that your kids can look back on when they're adults and parents themselves and try and emulate their own children. So when you're planning your family vacation you probably want to find a place to stay will be a part of your fun and not just a cold impersonal and overpriced hotel room.

If you plan a vacation near the beach you probably want to spend as much time as possible beachcombing and enjoying the local sites and tourist attractions. Many families enjoy staying in rentals instead of a hotel because they are more of a home base and allow a family to continue with home-cooked meals and keeping up with the realities of life including having privacy and space instead of being crammed into a double size room.

Many homes that double as vacation rentals for families are in prime locations so it's easy to walk down to the beach and enjoy everything you came to enjoy without doing it on a strict timeline.

If you have small children it's an inconvenience to have to find a family-friendly restaurant to enjoy all your meals especially when you have picky eaters. While it's a luxury to eat out once in a while on vacation it can be inexpensive chunk out of your vacation budget if you have to pay for family meals three times a day. If you're able to stay in rentals that have a kitchen you can cook your meals and snacks and concentrate your financial efforts on what you came for which is having fun -not eating out.

When you're looking for vacation rentals you want to do as much planning in advance as possible. Plan out what you want to see and where you want to go so that you can select a home that is going to be near your main areas of interest.

Keep in mind that most of the time you are probably renting sight unseen based on pictures that are posted on the website so be sure to ask if the pictures are up to date and accurate and don't just assume that they are.

Do your research and ask what is included in the rental and how you are expected to leave the property. Many rentals will have a fully stocked kitchen and will ask you to replace it you use while others don't. And unlike a hotel room that has made service on a daily basis homes that you rent from a private party or even a real estate agent don't provide housekeeping until after you're gone. So make sure you ask them what condition you're supposed to leave the home-for example are you supposed to strip the bedding or just leave everything as you found it and let the housekeeping staff do the rest?

If you do your research your vacation should be a successful endeavor worth remembering.
