Visitors of all ages and nationalities visit the lovely cultural capital of the Netherlands,Must See Low Cost Attractions of Amsterdam Articles with the youth and independent traveller demographics enjoying the advantages of the affordable and comfortable Amsterdam hostels. For those visitors who want to make the very most of a stay in this delightful city without spending a fortune, there are a few notable destinations not to miss.

Singel

This former moat once served to protect the old city, until expansion eventually outgrew it in 1585. Now it serves as a canal that connects many notable destinations together - from the Bloemenmarkt flower market to the Muntorren tower. Some Amsterdam hostels are within walking distance along the Singel’s banks, which makes it an excellent place for first-time visitors to begin their exploration.

Dam Square

The Dam Square is the veritable historic heart of the city, though the sights are relatively simple compared to the more lavish attractions that surround it. The various buildings and landmarks in the square, however, have witnessed some of the Netherlands’ most historic moments - from the nearby Koninklijk Paleis (or Royal Palace) serving as the bureaucratic centre, to the Dam itself serving as the reception site of Napoleon’s takeover, in 1808.

Efteling

If you're a fan of theme parks, you will definitely want to check out Efteling. Not only is it the largest theme park in the Netherlands, but it is also one of the oldest thriving ones in the world. Of particular interest are the rides and attractions that revolve around the many beloved fairy tales that originated in the Netherlands, such as the Langnek and the Emperor’s New Clothes.

Van Gogh Museum

If a busy schedule or a limited budget forces you to choose only one museum to check out, make sure to visit the museum dedicated to one of the most recognisable artists in the world. It houses 200 paintings, 400 drawings and 700 letters – a large enough collection to highlight Van Gogh’s artistic development over the years as his work moved through sombre earth tones to vivid, mesmerising palettes of colour.

Civic Guards Gallery

The Schuttersgalerij is home to an extensive collection of artworks depicting Dutch society throughout the years. What makes it stand out in this list, however, is its free admittance. Anyone can walk in and appreciate the works on display, which is always an appealing prospect for those staying in low-cost Amsterdam hostels. The exhibit itself is small compared to its grander neighbours, but the free entrance makes it an excellent prospect.

Vondelpark

Want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and just take some time to relax? The Vondelpark is the perfect place. Not only is it conveniently located close to many of the city's museums, one of the excellent Amsterdam hostels is located right inside it! You may be able to catch a free concert or theatrical act if you're lucky, and you'll be able to see the famous statue of the poet-playwright Vondel – for whom the park is named. A fun fact: the park was actually named Nieuwe Park when it first opened, in 1865, but Vondel’s statue became so famous it was eventually renamed in his honour!

Keep all these attractions in mind to help you make the most of your time in this fabulous city.
