Orange Beach - What to Do Beyond the Beach

Alabama’s gulf coast is known for its pristine beaches, emerald-green water and friendly people. Beyond these staples of one of the area’s premier vacation spots, there are many sporting activities to see and do that can add excitement to any getaway.

Orange Beach, Alabama has carved out a well-earned reputation as one of the top vacation spots on the Gulf Coast, but it isn’t just the ocean that draws individuals and families in from all over.

Alabama’s coastline is known for its smooth, white-sand beaches and green water that is great for swimming and playing in the surf. Its rapid growth both in and around the Orange Beach area has also added fine dining, abundant nightlife and top-notch hotels to the list of amenities the area has to offer.

But the list doesn’t stop there.

Orange Beach may be known for its sand, its ocean and its relaxing atmosphere, but some of the most exciting sports, sporting events and athletic activities can be found in the area. Whether you’re visiting for a day or for a vacation, these various activities can appeal to spectators and participants of all ages, interests and ability levels.

For the sports fan, the city’s Sportsplex is located on the outskirts of Gulf State Park and houses a combination football and soccer stadium that seats upwards of 1,000 fans along with a number of city-maintained baseball and softball diamonds.

This complex has hosted NCAA Division I Southeastern Conference soccer tournaments and Division II championships. It also once was home to a professional football team, the Alabama Lightning of the now-defunct North American Football League.

For the active vacationers and nature lovers alike, the area’s Backcountry Trail system features a trailhead located in the Sportsplex and feeds into the extensive network of trails within Gulf State Park. This system is suited for hikers and nature lovers of all interests and abilities and provides access to some of the Gulf Coast’s finest natural scenery.

For vacationers who are even more active, Orange Beach also features a running club that runs an informal 5k one night each week. The club maintains a membership but does invite interested runners to join. The night of the run is determined ahead of time and details are available locally.

The local beaches, which run along the city’s downtown, are also a hotspot for unofficial sports of all types and ability levels. Whether it is volleyball, basketball, various forms of surfing and boarding or simple family games of baseball and football, the extensive white-sand areas and various rentals available from vendors all along the oceanfront provide the perfect setting for activities ranging from intimate games of catch to extensive clashes in team sports.

With these various options of all types and for all interests, Orange Beach opens up a world of possibilities for the vacationer. The best part about it is that it leaves the details up to the individual, who has all the options he or she needs to plan out the perfect vacation getaway.
