Volunteering in South America is an increasingly popular way to pass a year out from your studies – alternatively, it also offers a great opportunity for just gaining a slightly different perspective on life. One of the most popular ways to volunteer in Latin America is by working with children – but to make the experience worthwhile, it is important to consider what benefit this offers to the children themselves. Here are a few of the more important qualities that children stand to gain from the experience.
 
Self Esteem
 
Children from impoverished backgrounds will frequently have grown up under the impression that they are less important, or less worthy than others. Teaching them otherwise, and building in them a sense of self-worth and significance, is an incredibly important boundary to cross.
 
The Ability to Learn
 
There are many children who will seem to cooperate with learning in class situations, but then shy away from developing new skills in their own spare time. It is crucial to teach these children that learning is something that can occur progressively, independently and throughout their lives.

Finally, one of the most important things you can help a child to develop, no matter whether you decide to volunteer in Costa Rica or in Cuba, is the ability to solve problems. Having an effective reserve of initiative and common sense is a quality which will see these children through countless situations, for the rest of their lives.
