Sorrento

Based above the sea on a plain, the views from Sorrento stretch from the towering outline of Vesuvius to the shores of Naples, and it is one of the best bases for exploring this region of Italy. Villas nearby will afford you access to the town where you can visit the 14th century cathedral, with its rebuilt 1924 façade, and explore the delightful waterfront. Spend an afternoon wandering through the small port of Sorrento and visit the 14th century Franciscan monastery before relaxing at a café in the city with a limoncello - the town’s specialty lemon-flavoured liqueur.

Pompeii

One of the saddest locations you can visit while in Sorrento is the ruin of Pompeii, which, along with Herculaneum, was an ancient city in Italy. Villas located around this lovely area will give you the independence and flexibility to explore the ruins at your leisure. Before it was destroyed, when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, it was a thriving, wealthy Roman city, founded in the 6th or 7th century BC. When Vesuvius erupted, the city was buried under up to six metres of ash and pumice and most of the inhabitants died. It was rediscovered in the 1700s and, today, tourists can visit the site, which has mostly been excavated, and see the extraordinarily detailed everyday life of the inhabitants. Perhaps the most haunting is the existence of the body casts, which occurred when the inhabitants were covered so rapidly with the ash, which compressed around them, preserving them forever as they sat or lay. Today, Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a definite must-see when you are in the region.

Island of Capri

Just off the coast of Naples, this delightful island has been a resort area since the time of the Romans and is one of the jewels of Italy. Villas situated near Sorrento make it easy to get to the island. You can travel across and spend a day on the beaches and visit some of the best-preserved Roman villas in the country. As a playground for the ancient rich and famous, it's no wonder the place is a beacon of beauty. Head up to the top of the island to Anacapri and enjoy the views before visiting the Blue Grotto, a sea cave with a limestone floor. When you enter the cave it appears totally dark, but when you turn round, the effect of the sunlight bouncing off the white floor illuminates the cave in a blue hue – truly magical.
