Vacation Rentals Aren’t Always Hotels

When it comes to vacation rentals, oftentimes they can be condos or private homes or apartments that are not part of a commercial complex. When renting these types of destinations, it is important to remember the difference between them and a typical hotel.

Vacation rentals can come in all shapes, sizes and styles and can be unique in a number of ways. Because of this, it is good to keep in mind exactly what type of rental you have and the expectations that should come with it.

While it is always necessary to read up on any vacation rentals you are considering staying at, it’s equally important to have an accurate understanding of what you’re signing up for. This goes beyond the basic nuts and bolts of any accommodation - things like the total occupancy, amenities, pet policy and other basics - and includes more specific things you need to know about the type of place you are staying in.

For instance, when you stay in a typical hotel you can expect a basic level of certain services, such as maid service and toiletries provided, as well as a prompt response to anything that may break down in your room, such as the air conditioning.

However when it comes to vacation rentals, these basic levels of service can vary from one location to the next. Because of this, you should know exactly what to expect, and what not to expect, before your stay.

To start, when renting any place make sure you understand who the owner you are renting from is. If it is a private individual, does that person have references or testimonials that can prove they are a viable renter? Are they local and able to respond to issues that may come up during the stay? If it is a company, do they have a personal representative you can speak with if any problems come up? These questions and more should be answered before you agree to pay for anything.

At the same time, regardless of who you are renting from, make sure you know what you are responsible for and what you are not. In a hotel, you don’t have to clean up after your stay. In most vacation rentals, you must leave the place as you found it or be forced to pay a hefty cleaning fee.

Likewise, are you responsible for addressing or correcting any mechanical failures or problems with the property during your stay? The answer is almost always no, but more importantly, will the renter be able to address these issues in a timely fashion or not until after you have vacated the premises?

Finally, what type of contract must be signed? Unlike staying in a hotel, there can be any number of unique, individual stipulations in a rental agreement. Understand what you are agreeing to and what is stipulated in it, because it may be something you need to consider before stepping foot on the property - like maybe you need to bring your own towels, or that you can’t use the laundry facilities.

Vacation rentals can be a great option for an extended stay, but only if you know what you’re getting into. Having informed, realistic expectations can help you have a terrific experience without the headaches of unexpected troubles.
