Web Design Mistakes That Can Cause Google Penalties

Google owns the lion's share of search engine traffic.

So if you make web design mistakes and your site gets penalized by Google, you may lose a lot of targeted traffic. As you know, traffic equals money in the Internet world. So it will certainly help if you can avoid mistakes that may looking your site penalized. Here are a little examples.

Mistake 1. Lack of content. Lack of content doesn't just refer to the number of pages on a web page. A web page can contain hundreds of pages but these pages contain nothing but duplicate content or ads and affiliate links. These sites tend to perform poorly in Google because Google loves original content. So do what you can to publish useful and original content on your web page. This is more of a content issues rather than a web design issue but it's very important. So we mention it here.

Mistake 2. Too heavily loaded with graphics. The loading time of a web page is becoming more and more important in the eyes of Google. They have tweaked their search algorithm to include the loading time of a web page. So never try to include too many large sized images on your site. These files will slow down the loading of the site tremendously. Always optimize your images for the web. Use JPG or GIF compressed format to minimize file sizes and speed up loading times.

Mistake 3. Missing title tags. Google always look at the title tags of a web page to determine it's relevancy. So if you have missing title tags, your web page may be penalized and you won't looking the rankings that you are eyeing for. This is a very common mistake. For instance, many web designers use the same title tags by followingout the entire site. This is a great mistake that may cost you. For each page, use a out of the ordinary title tag that accurately describe the content of the web page.

Mistake 4: Missing Meta tags. About a decade ago, many web pages are made up of static texts. So the search engines have relied heavily on elements such as Meta tags to determine contextual relevancy. Today, many web designers (perhaps out of laziness) tend to leave out Meta tags altogether, thinking that they no longer matter. Google doesn't really penalize your web page if you never use Meta tags, but it is possible that you may lose a few spots because your competitors are using them!

Mistake 5: Publishing multiple pages that contain similar content on your web page. This is a big mistake because Google may think that you are trying to cheat them with lots of duplicate content. For example, your category pages and search pages may contain parts of your original articles. If so, use canonical links to point these pages to the primary content pages to avoid Google penalties.
