Faro Ladies – Who Were They?

Actually the history of female gamblers has begun long before real casinos were introduced. The first famous gambling ladies were known as the Faro ladies. They received such a dub, as they are known to play the Faro card game late into the night in their aristocratic parlors, while their noble husbands gambled at Brook’s or White’s.

It is difficult to describe how much of social disapproval has poured onto the Faro casino ladies both directly from the public and from the English press. As it seems, gambling was a pure phenomenon of England in the late 18th centuries. At the time such names as Lady Luttrell, Lady Archer and Mrs. Albinia Hobart became notoriously famous.
These noble and aristocratic female gamblers were featured in the local cartoons and mocked out in many ways, as at those times of French revolutionary turbulence society was inspected on any “social vice” or any moral flaws, which could undermine political order.
In those years female casinos looked like living rooms, where Faro tables were run by famous casino ladies. This was a peculiar thing for them, as they could touch the realm of visible independence, which gave them the sense of power due to wealth and political power. Female gamblers were eager to participate in the political life of England. They discussed contemporary political conditions and were known to support different candidates from the Tori or Whigs. From time to time they canvassed for any candidate to promote themselves and their views on politics and society. They were influential, but still these casino ladies could not avoid social critics.
It is surprising, but what now is considered to be basically a men’s domain, was exclusively feminine in the beginning. Female casinos were attributed to some sort of witchery.
Fortunately, the modern society is wise enough to accept casino ladies on equal terms, so that they can enjoy games of chance or of skill on the same rights as men.
