Every woman has had a bad haircut at some point in her life and has been forced to endure a creative use of hats while the damage repairs itself. So when you find good hairstylists, if you are like most women you stick to them like glue until they die or retire. But life happens and sometimes you have to find a new salon and a new hair stylist whether you want to or not.

If you don’t have a good hairstylist, here are a few hints to help you find one. First- the biggest obstacle is knowing who to try. A good rule of thumb is to find someone who has the type of style you like and ask them where they got their hair cut. Most women are flattered by the question and are more than happy to share their good fortune with you.

When you find a salon to try you want to find a hairstylist who can do the job and luckily this is a very visual field. The hairstylist is a walking billboard for her own work. If your potential stylist has damaged, over processed hair and clearly doesn’t take care of her own hair- reassess letting her near your hair. If she doesn’t care about her own hair, the odds are not in your favor that she will devout more time and energy to yours.

If you have short hair, you will probably find a stylist who also has short hair has a better understanding of what makes your style and cut work. By the same token if you have long locks you may feel a stylist who also has long hair will understand the context of your hair cut better.

When you talk to your stylist about your cut it is very helpful to have photos of what you are thinking about that include a front, side and back shot. But don’t expect your beautician to make you look like the Hollywood starlet whose hair cut you admire. If you have thick hair and your starlet has thin hair, the style won’t work for your hair type. By the same token if your starlet has a round face and you don’t share that face shape, the style won’t look the same on you as it does on her. And most importantly, it’s just a haircut, not reconstructive surgery so don’t judge the stylist as poor if the style doesn’t transform you into a Hollywood starlet.

A good stylist will help guide your decisions to the style that is right for you and will make you appreciate your fine hair and round face or your thick hair and your square face or whatever combination Mother Nature gave you instead of longing to look good in the style that you admired but wasn’t a good match for your assets.
A good salon will offer a host of good stylist to choose from and you should be able to find your next stylist for life.
