Plus size are beautiful words in lingerie.  For the women that have ample bosoms, it is often difficult to find the perfect fit.  They end up with too-tight cups that produce strain on the back and shoulders, puckering and spillage.  To keep the straps from having to do all the work, the key is to find the right cup size that is both supportive and comfortable.  Fine lingerie brands strive to enhance the feminine silhouette and the perfect fit will ensure that it does so.

Fitting is a science and there is an actual methodology. A combination of self-sizing (measuring) and phone sizing (discussing your fit with us over the phone) will usually help you find the right fit for you!

Measuring yourself is the first step in finding your size remotely. You will need a tape measure and preferably another person, as it is tricky to get the right measurements on your own. Let’s go!

  • While wearing your best fitting bra (without padding, if possible), measure your ribcage by pulling the tape snugly around your ribcage, just under the breasts. For our purposes, if you are measuring at a half-inch mark, round up to the nearest whole number for consistency. This rule will apply to all of our measurements. This is your band size base number.
  • Take the tape and measure around the upper part of your chest, above your breasts. This is your band size check number.
  • Pull the tape around the fullest part of your breasts (over the nipples) and take a measurement of your bust. This is your cup size number.

We’ll use these measurements as an example:

Band Size Base Number: 29

Band Size Check Number: 34

Cup Size Number: 35

Now, lets put them into a formula:

Band size will be determined by a simple formula: if your base size number is even, add 4; if it is odd, add 5. * This will be your band size and this number should match your band size check number within an inch or so.

29 + 5= 34

*Note: some women find that adding 2 if even and 3 if odd works better to match their band size confirmation number. This happens more often in plus size women.

Cup size will be determined by the difference between the cup size number and band size. For each inch of difference, a cup size is added.

35 – 34= 1 (A)

When we put it all together we have a 34 band size and an A cup size.

Of course, these are just guidelines and there will be mild discrepancies sometimes.

Women often complain, and rightly so, that there are too few sizes and choices in lingerie.  At Bits of Lace, we have aimed to make that obsolete.  The luxury brands that we carry, like Empreinte and Conturelle, have extensive cup and band sizes (A-H and 29-46).  This allows for us to experiment with different sizes and shapes to find every woman’s perfect fit.  It usually does not take the sizing professionals long to determine a woman’s sizeFree Articles, but they are also willing to troubleshoot any bra issues that anyone has.
