What Type Of Vaginismus Treatments Are There?

Vaginismus is a condition in women where there is an involuntary tightening of the vagina. This tightening occurs due to the reflex of pubococcygeus or PC muscle. A woman suffering from this condition experiences pain while inserting any thing into the vagina.

This makes her unable to have sexual intercourse. The severity of pain differs from woman to woman. There are two forms of Vaginismus which affect women, Primary Vaginismus and Secondary Vagnismus. The causes for each of these conditions are different and mostly vary from being physical and non-physical. Primary Vaginismus occurs mainly due to non-physical factors such as fear or anxiety about having sexual intercourse whereas Secondary Vaginismus occurs due to physical factors such as infections. Though this condition leads to lot of irritation between couples but there is no need to panic. This is because Vaginismus can be easily treated. There are various types of Vagnismus treatments that help overcome the condition completely and without any kind of embarrassment.
Treatment for Vaginismus
Vaginismus treatment can be of two forms, psychological and physical. The former is effective in treating women who have developed Primary Vaginismus whereas physical treatment is provided to women suffering from Secondary Vaginismus.
Psychological treatment: This type of Vaginismus treatment focuses on the various psychological aspects that lead to the problem. A woman undergoing this treatment can deal with the condition in her own way or can also consult a therapist to look into the matter. The key of this kind of treatment is to eradicate the negative thoughts from the mind of a woman that have contributed to Vaginismus. These include fear of having sexual intercourse, belief that sex is shameful and traumatic childhood experiences. This kind of treatment is quite effective in teenagers who are the main victims of Primary Vaginismus
Physical Treatment: This treatment of Vaginismus focuses mainly on exploring the vagina through means of touch and includes treating the internal spasms. In physical treatment, desensitization of vagina is carried out with the help of vaginal dilators. These dilators mostly phallic in shape are inserted in the vagina to treat the tensed spasms through the process of dilation. As the treatment progresses, the size of the objects increase until the problem is fully eliminated. Other than these, there are numerous other comprehensive therapies used to treat Vaginismus. These therapies involve a powerful combination of counseling and physical and behavioral exercises. Physical exercises such as Kegel’s exercises which involve pelvic floor muscle contraction and relaxation also help a woman to get rid of Vaginismus. The main importance of these treatments is that they all help a woman to recover at her own pace and also provide maximum levels of privacy to the woman. Vaginismus treatments show very high rates of success in eliminating the condition. However, the chances of treating Vaginismus increases even more if there is the involvement of a partner in the therapy or if the treatment is done with a specialist.
