A friend of mine suggests that "women’s bodies are programmed to awaken
in the middle of the night so they can stoke the fire." Even
Shakespeare’s Macbeth entreats a physician to cure his wife’s insomnia: "Pluck from the memory a rooted sorrow, Race out the written troubles
of the brain; And with-some sweet oblivious antidote cleanse the stuft
bosom of that perilous stuff which weighs upon the heart."
