Prior to the early 1990’s, silicone implants were often used for breast augmentation in the United States. Then, the “silicone implant scare” occurred, and the FDA forbade using the implants in routine breast augmentation surgery. Saline implants then became the standard for breast enlargements. Further research has shown that silicone implants pose no greater risk than those made of saline, and the FDA once again has approved them for routine use. Today, the choice is entirely up to the consumer and his/her physician.
