It is normal in software industry when Corporate ERP vendors are releasing new version every several year.  It is good idea to be on the latest release, however it is not really required and it might be costly to undergo version upgrade project once in every three years or so.

Microsoft Dynamics GP is new name for very popular ERP and MRP platform – Great Plains Dynamics and eEnterprise.  Each accounting application lifecycle requires maintenance, and periodic version update.  Current GP version is 10.0. 

If you have Microsoft Dynamics GP implemented in your organization and you are currently on one of the old versions: 8.0, 7.5, 7.0, 6.0, 5.5, 5.0, 4.0, Great Plains Dynamics on Pervasive SQL Server 2000/Btrieve or Ctree (version 7.5 and below) or Great Plains Accounting for DOS or Windows: 9.5, 9.2 or earlier, you should consider Great Plains version update or at least moving existing version from old hardware to the new Windows 2003 or 2008 server.  

The successor of eEnterprise is Great Plains Dynamics GP Professional, current version is 10.0 as of November 2007.  If you are using eEnterprise, you need to consider update from your version, more likely 6.0 to GP 10.0. 

Approximately every two years you see ERP application to release new version.  From Accounting perspective itself such mid-size ERP and MRP application as Dynamics GP Great Plains probably does required job and you do not really see the need to undergo sometimes complex and a bit challenging version upgrade process

The likely reason of such migration is outdated version of Great Plains Dynamics and inability to upgrade.  Customers on older ERP version typically do not have current support plan with Microsoft Business Solutions and do not have new version registration key for upgrade.
