If your eyes are healthy, when seeing
through the cornea and lens, an image should always appear with sharp outlines
on the retina. If the image is blurred, then you should know that your eyes
have got a visual defect. Myopia is one common example of an eye defect that
you can suffer from.
It is important to note that myopia, also referred to as short-sightedness is an optical defect which causes blurring for distant vision. With this condition, although near vision remains clear, the eye tends to see distant objects quite poorly. People suffering from this visual defect tend to squint in an effort to improve the sharpness of the image. They also tend to experience eye strain as well as headaches.
There are various causes of myopia including:
I. It often occurs when the eye has a visual defect. This could happen if the cornea is too steep for its length or when an axis is too long for its power. This causes light rays to focus at a point in front of the retina instead of doing so directly on its surface
II. It may occur as a result of diseases you may have suffered at infancy
III. It can also be caused by work-related eye strain that occurs over long periods of time
IV. It is also considered to be hereditary and as such, you may be at a higher risk if your parents have got nearsightedness.
Myopia is a visual defect that often begins at around 10-12 years of age, at the time of puberty and gradually increasing up to 20 years, all through maturation to adulthood. In some cases, as a result of the high demand for reading and study, this condition may continue throughout the university years.
Generally, cases of short-sightedness often range from mild where treatment may not be necessary to severe where vision is significantly affected. In this cases glasses or contacts are needed, cosmetic contact lenses won't be of any use though. However, regular checkups will help monitor and even reduce the negative effects of myopia and are therefore encouraged if you are to ensure that your eyes remain healthy. Remember you need to be proactive if you are to maintain the good health of your eyes.
