4 Tips For A Successful Hip Hop Class
If you're considering taking a hip hop class to learn some of the latest moves, you're in luck! The dance style is gaining in popularity, which means many studios across the country are offering these classes. Before you sign up for lessons, consider asking if you can participate in just one hip hop class. Some studios will let potential students take a class before paying to ensure that they enjoy the dance style. If you're attending your first lesson, use these tips to ensure that it's a successful one.
Wear Loose Fitting Clothing
Unlike other types of dance classes, dancers in a hip hop class should wear loose fitting clothing. Many dancers choose some type of athletic wear, like track pants, tank tops or T shirts. Avoid denim jeans, because these can restrict your movement, and shorts. You'll be doing moves that will have your knees and shins brushing the floor and pants will provide an extra layer of protection against bumps, bruises and scrapes. After a few classes, you'll be able to see what most dancers wear and you'll be able to mimic them if you wish.
Wear Comfortable Athletic Shoes
If you're a dancer with experience in other styles of dance, you may already have a few pairs of dedicated shoes for dance, such as tap, jazz or ballet shoes. However, when you're taking a hip hop class, you can leave them at home and just wear your most comfortable pair of gym shoes. Choose shoes with white soles, rather than black, because this will help protect the studio floor against marks. Also forget about flimsy sneakers that are more for appearance. You'll want to wear shoes that have quite a bit of support and cushioning to help prevent injuries to your feet, knees, hips and back when you're dancing.
Practice At Home
If you can, turn on your favorite song from your classes at home and just start dancing. Make up your own moves, use some from your classes and just enjoy yourself. If you have a freestyle portion of your lesson, show off the moves you've created -- your instructor may want to incorporate them into a group routine.
Remember That Hip Hop Class Is Supposed To Be Fun!
Lastly, remember that you're there to have fun. The instructor will likely have some corrections for you (and your classmates!) throughout the lesson, but realize that these corrections are just to help you become a better dancer. Everyone started as a beginner at one time and corrections are a part of lessons -- after all, you're paying the instructor for his or her expertise and experience so they can help you become a better dancer. Apply these corrections with a smile and you might be surprised at how much you enjoy your lesson.
These are just a few ways you can ensure that a hip hop class is fun and successful. If you're interested in taking one of these classes, look for a local studio that offers a variety of dance lessons.
