Bristol Royal Infirmary Sheds Its Skin:

Before its new design was thought up and developed,Public And Healthcare Sector Businesses Benefit From Modernised Frontages Articles the frontage of the Bristol Royal Infirmary was seen as unpleasant, in cleanliness and aesthetics, and in very poor condition.

University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust knew that the structure of the building needed improving, as well as the appearance.

A competition was run to come up with a new design concept and the winner was chosen; an architectural practice called Nieto Sobejano.

The decision was aided largely by public consultation;

  • Design ideas were displayed within the hospital
  • An online poll conducted by The Bristol Evening Post
  • Front page coverage of the competition entries

The project was driven forward, but the public involvement created excitement and eagerness in a wider community.

The frontage is a remarkable modern skin over the top of the standing structure, made of powder-coated aluminium and glass, providing the hospital with an energy-efficient, maintenance-free new façade.

A new green buffer zone now sits between the hospital and the main road, making it more inviting and calming for visitors and patients, as it provides them with breathing space, as they arrive at the hospital.

The new design delivers;

  • Enhanced acoustic performance
  • Better insulation
  • Improved ventilation
  • Thermally-efficient windows

According to the designer, “by providing the building with a new façade, we were creating a new urban space.” - another of the benefits the new frontage has provided.

Lliswerry High School Gets A Face-Lift:

Thanks to a huge regeneration scheme in Newport, Lliswerry High School has abandoned its dull and dated appearance, and come back to life with a modern burst of colour.

The 21st Century Schools Fund was just one source of funding in a varied list which have helped the high school refurbish its;

  • External façade
  • Reception area
  • Classrooms

The school’s restoration is just one example of Newport City Council and Newport Norse supporting local businesses and giving them a much needed boost.

Thanks to the refurbishment, the building now has;

  • A smarter appearance
  • Insulation and new lights which are more energy efficient
  • Reduced bills
  • A lower carbon footprint

Alyson Mills, the head teacher, stated that the school “is delighted with the new frontage that reflects the modern approaches within the building.”
