There are different types of heat radiators, classified on the basis of the enclosed heating medium. Some of the popular forms of radiators in use, are as follows:

  1. Hot Water Radiator – As the name suggests, the heating fluid used in such a radiator, is hot water itself. Often, a sealed hollow metal container is fed hot water, either by gravity feed, convection, or in some cases, using pressure pumps. Gradually, the heat is released, and the hot water cools, and sinks to the bottom of the radiator. The cold water, is then, forced out of a pipe at the other end.   2. Hot Water Baseboard Radiator – These days, hot water radiators have mostly been replaced with forced hot water baseboard style radiators. These deploy copper pipes with aluminum fins, to increase their heated surface area. Conduction boiler systems are used in conjunction, to transfer energy from the water into the all-metal radiators.

  3. Steam Radiators - Steam radiators operate at substantially higher temperatures, hence have been observed to be less power efficient. The heat loss is greater as steam is distributed over large areas, especially in high—rises. Steam, as a heating medium has an advantage though - it flows under it's own pressure, thereby eliminating a need for deploying separate pressure pumps.

  4. Electric Baseboard Radiators – These radiators have an advantage, in that these are typically inexpensive to produce, and install. Electric Baseboard radiators are low profile units that run along the periphery of a wall, and consist of a central heating element, surrounded by radiating fins. Although, they are a source of instant heat, and offer great reliability, their cost-effectiveness largely depends on the local electricity pricing.
