Ants mark their path or track with scents/pheromone.  Usually they do so from the source of the food to the nest in order to communicate to other members of the colony to follow the trail at ease.  This is a very distinguished feature seen among various species of ants.   Many of us would have seen that the ‘ants’ usually follow the track/trail in a disciplined fashion.   When the ‘trail’ is smudged or removed,Scent marking managers in corporate? Articles the ants get confused for sometime and once again they trace back the path and move forward.

Since ants being a very primitive insect and do not have evolved communication system, they follow the chemical communication method/technique to keep the group together.  Chemical ecology has great significance in the life of tiny ants.

The interesting point is that many corporate and its employees love to follow such trails very meticulously.  They also claim such actions to be as a part of discipline or system.  They also insist upon every one to ascertain that they follow the ‘defined path’ without any deviation.   In some instances, the deviators are even punished.

One needs to ask the big question of how the source of food was identified by the so called first ant. Ants do search for food and such process is called ‘foraging’.  Only when the food is discovered, the ant that discovered the food uses the scent marking to help other members to identify and come to the food source.  Only after achievement is accomplished, the path is been created to ensure that all the ants follow it very meticulously.  Pheromone marking is done to guide other ants in the colony to locate the food.

But why and how the corporate create or follow such trails in the organization?  The generally understood philosophy or norm is that only when the corporate and its employees follow a defined path or a particular pattern, results could be achieved.

Remember that the first ant(s) that discovered the ‘food’ would not have either created a path for itself or would have followed any rigid path during its search of food.  If it had followed such rigid trail, it might not have discovered the food at all.

Being disciplined is although inevitable, the very discipline should facilitate in achieving the result and it should not hinder the quest.   Certainly the pheromone marking alone could offer quick transportation of the food to the nest as ants need a path to follow.

Perhaps, the truth or science would have been known to the ants that the scent marking technique would help only to ‘repeat and or sustain success’ & not to ‘create success’ and that is why they do not follow the above exercise during foraging.

The corporate before start implementing and imposing various systems and process, should gawk for a while as how such process are going bring a difference to the organization.

Also help the ‘ants in the corporate’ to be different from the ‘ants’ in nature by teaching the true biology of ants.
