Very few things induce panic and stress like an approaching academic exam. As long as you focus and study productively,8 Great Tips for Successful Studying Articles you’ll be able to experience great success. The following eight tips will help you study more effectively, giving you the confidence you need to tackle the exam as the big day approaches.

1.Get Enough Sleep

In order to perform well on any academic exam, you need to get the right amount of sleep. Aim to get at least eight hours of sleep before an exam, no matter how much you think you should stay up and cram. If you’re getting good sleep, you’ll have improved focus during class as well as improved recall on test day.

2. Time Yourself

Tests typically must be completed in a specified amount of time, so it’s always a good habit to time yourself as you complete sample questions or practice exams. Timing yourself can be especially helpful on essay-based tests. If you have experience gathering your thoughts and putting them on paper, you’ll be ready to write your heart out on test day.

3. Eat Properly

Just like the rest of your body, your brain needs fuel to function at its best. Studying on an empty stomach is never a good idea – it will reduce your energy levels and cause you to lose focus. Make sure you’re not hungry when you study and have snacks on hand so that you can refuel without getting distracted. Also, don’t forget to eat a healthy breakfast before it’s time to take your test.

4. Eliminate Distractions

Whether it’s computers, phones or tablets, it’s hard to disconnect from the noise and bustle of the world around you. Successful studying requires intense focus so try to limit your use of these electronics during your study time. Make sure you limit computer use to sites and programs that are directly related to your studies. If you find yourself tempted to check social media, consider using products to temporarily block certain sites so that you can stay on track as you hit the books.

5. Find an Ideal Study Space

A comfortable space is crucial for productive studying. Some students can study in a busy coffee shop, while others prefer studying at a desk at home. If you’re studying at home, try not to study in bed or in a chair that’s just a little too comfortable – after all, you want to be studying, not falling asleep! No matter what kind of environment suits you best, make sure to have all your necessary supplies nearby to eliminate the risk of distraction.

6. Find a Study Buddy

Sometimes, all it takes is a little companionship to make a chore a little easier. Consider finding a study buddy to help you prepare for an exam. An extra set of eyes can often help you work through that problem that has been giving you trouble. Just make sure you and your study buddy maintain focus and save the socializing for breaks.

7. Ask for Help

Throughout your academic career, you’ve probably had moments where you feel as if you’re simply just stuck. If you have a problem that you just can’t seem to work through, consider asking a classmate, a teacher or a tutor for help. Tutors are especially helpful if you’re taking a major exam such as the SAT, ACT or LSAT. Test preparation programs, such as SAT prep tutoring, will help you work through tough problems and help you learn exactly what to expect when the big test day arrives.

8. Stay Positive

No matter what challenges you face in life, it’s important to stay optimistic. Exam anxiety can wreak havoc on your brain, causing you to lose focus on the task at hand. Even if you haven’t grasped all the material on the test, focus on doing your best. If you approach an exam with a positive and confident attitude, you’ll be much more likely to have great results.
