David Gariff, a senior lecturer at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., will be presenting two insightful lectures on renowned painters Botticelli and Klimt at Flagler College’s “Ideas and Images” series. The lectures will take place on Monday and Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Flagler Room, located at 74 King St. Gariff, who also teaches art history at The Catholic University of America, aims to share his extensive knowledge and experience with the Flagler community.

On Monday, Gariff will present “Sandro Botticelli (1446-1510): An Anniversary Lecture,” commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Italian painter’s death. Botticelli, known for his refined and sensual paintings, is celebrated as one of the greatest artists of the Florentine Renaissance. His works, such as "The Birth of Venus" and "Primavera," are iconic representations of 15th-century art.
Tuesday’s lecture will focus on “Gustav Klimt and the Vienna Secession,” marking the anniversary of the Austrian painter’s birth. Klimt, a central figure in the Vienna Secession movement, is renowned for his distinctive style and use of gold leaf in paintings like "The Kiss" and "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I." Gariff will delve into Klimt’s art and career, highlighting the cultural and intellectual vibrancy of Viennese life during his time.
Despite the 400-year gap between Botticelli and Klimt, Gariff notes that the environments in which these artists thrived share remarkable similarities. Both painters were part of rich cultural and intellectual movements that significantly influenced their work and legacy.
