Card combinations enrich the game and make it more fun. They are particularly exciting because they have the power to change the course of the game in a blink of the eye.

Roems

In klaverjas the bonus points awarded for making card combinations in a trick are known as “roem”. A common type of roem is a unbroken sequence of cards in a suit,Bonus Points In Klaverjas Articles which is simply known as a run.

Sequences in klaverjassen require the order of the cards in a suit to be:

·         Ace ’ King ’ Queen ’ Jack ’ 10 ’ 9 ’ 8 ’ 7

This applies to both trumps and other suites.

Roems are:

·         Three cards of the same suit ’ 20 points

·         Stuk (king and queen of trumps) ’ 20 points

·         Three cards of the same suit including king and queen of trumps ’ 40 points

·         Four cards of the same suit ’ 50 points

·         Four cards of the same suit including king and queen of trumps ’ 70 points

·         Four kings/queens/aces/or 10s ’ 100 points

·         Four jacks ’ 200 points

In the game of klaverjas the team who takes the last trick is awarded an additional bonus of 10 points. If a team takes

all the tricks it receives a special bonus of 100 points.

The Play

Klaverjassen players try to collect all the bonus points in the tricks they or their partners take while avoiding giving bonus points to the rival team. When card combinations are made they are claimed by the team who wins the trick, and counted.

In special circumstances, for example when a team choses trumps but believes that it is likely that the opposition will win the hand, then claiming the bonus might be avoided on purpose (since it will go the the opposition).

Combinations Are Fun

Card combinations are at the core of klaverjassen. They give an unique flavor to the game and make it stand out from other trick-taking card games. However, card combinations may be sometimes difficult to pull off, especially for unexperienced players.

Combinations And Variants

Because the game is extremely popular, numerous variants based on it have appeared. These sometimes feature  combinations of their own. However, the above mentioned combinations are generally used by most klaverjas players.
