The Legend of St. Valentine

The story of St. Valentine dates back to the 3rd century A.D. in Rome. According to historical accounts,Free Valentine Greeting Cards Articles Valentine was a priest during the reign of Emperor Claudius II. Claudius believed that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, so he banned marriages for young men. Valentine, recognizing the injustice of this decree, defied the emperor and continued to perform marriages in secret. When his actions were discovered, Valentine was sentenced to death.

The Imprisonment and Miracles

While imprisoned, Valentine is said to have fallen in love with the jailer's daughter. There are various versions of this legend. In one, she cared for him during his confinement. In another, she was blind, and the jailer asked Valentine, who was also known for his healing abilities, to cure her blindness. Valentine recommended a special ointment, but it did not work.

On February 14th, 270 A.D., just before his execution, Valentine wrote a farewell letter to the jailer's daughter, signing it "From your Valentine." He included a bit of yellow saffron in the letter, and as she held it, she miraculously regained her sight.

Establishment of St. Valentine's Day
