NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery is set to showcase the original works of New York-based artist Sa Peng in the exhibition "Mélange of Milieu." The event kicks off on February 14, 2017, and runs until March 7, 2017, with an opening reception on Thursday, February 16, from 6-8 pm.
Sa Peng, a versatile artist, employs a variety of mediums, including woodblock prints and sculpture. However, she considers oil painting her "primary language." The rich, soft hues of oil paints are wielded with surprising intensity in her work. Peng masterfully balances these gentle tones with vibrant bursts of color and sharply defined light and shadow effects. This technique guides the viewer's eye through the composition, imbuing each scene or portrait with a vivid sense of life.
Peng's keen eye for line and composition further enhances the lifelike quality of her paintings. Each piece is meticulously grounded in space and proportion, inviting viewers into her imaginative world. "I draw on my personal memories, emotions, and experiences," Peng explains, "treating them as residents in my imaginary world and allowing them to develop organically." This intricate interplay between artist and subject lends her paintings their distinctive, dynamic character.
Born in 1993 in mainland China, Sa Peng moved to Vancouver, Canada, at the age of 14. In 2012, she relocated to New York City, where she currently resides and creates her art.

This February, Agora Gallery presents "Mélange of Milieu," a group exhibition that showcases innovative genre-bending techniques by contemporary artists. The eight featured artists hail from diverse backgrounds, including Ukraine, Switzerland, Austria, Japan, and the United States. Despite their varied origins, their works engage in a compelling dialogue with one another.
The exhibition juxtaposes hazy, Impressionistic landscapes with bold figural paintings, creating a dynamic interplay of styles. Notably, "Mélange of Milieu" stands out for its equal emphasis on sculpture and painting. The show includes highly realistic bronze figurines of imaginary animals, sleek stone depictions of the human form in motion, and vibrant wooden block assemblages that evoke cosmic patterns.
By exploring the works of Sa Peng and her contemporaries, "Mélange of Milieu" offers a unique glimpse into the evolving landscape of contemporary art. Don't miss this opportunity to experience the vibrant and diverse world of modern artistic expression.
