The large-scale figurative paintings of New York painter Judith Tawil are expressive,The Large-Scale Figurative Paintings of New York’s Judith Tawil Articles dynamic, and brimming with life. With a strong sense of line and an elegant use of composition, Tawil chooses bold, often unexpected colors to elucidate emotive resonance, elaborate gesture, and make her figures come alive. She is not so much concerned with space or depth from the picture plane but rather focused on her subject and the many nuances to be found when confronted with the complexities of the human form.

One element that distinguishes Tawil’s work is the thickness with which paint is applied to canvas, both conveying a strong sense of movement and rhythm and also accentuating the use of brushstroke and the many layers of subtlety and meaning found therein. Tawil shows us, the viewer, that just as each of her subjects is entirely unique, so are the many levels of consciousness and experience and emotion that makes that person human—and that remind us of our own unique experience in this world.

Judith Tawil is a retired professor of literature and currently lives and works in New York City.

About the Exhibition

Enigmatic Realms: Endless Worlds

Agora Gallery is pleased to present Enigmatic Realms, a showcase of eight contemporary artists holding a mirror up to the people and places that surround them. Hailing from Pakistan, Switzerland, Argentina, and everywhere in between, the artists on display cover many different worlds with their images. There is the seasoned fashion designer who currently creates fashion illustrations in the form of larger-than-life metal sculptures, each abstracted female figure a sensitive exploration of the body. There is the artist who only uses organic materials from pigment to tool, with the resulting images as wonderfully evocative and detailed as any traditional painting. Some works depict the human body as neon bouquets of colorful shapes; some as flattened, stained-glass-like jewels; some as figures in a carefully crafted allegory. Some artists create whole scenes for us while others show hyperrealistic bodies against blurry, atmospheric depths. There are farms and cities, kitchens and offices. Enigmatic Realms teaches us that for every pair of eyes there is a different world.
