Wooden Blocks
Wooden blocks are some of the simplest toys available for children, and, as a result are some of the best. Their warm and smooth feel is pleasant to the touch, and they're very sturdy so little ones can build them up and knock them down as many times as they'd like without damaging them. They come in a wide variety of shapes too for hours of imaginative play.
You can find wooden blocks both in a natural finish and painted. Usually the painted blocks are colored with non-toxic paints, but if your children are still exploring life with their mouths, the natural, un-painted wooden blocks will be a better choice.
Because wooden blocks are made of wood, they are also hard. Care should be taken to make sure that children play with them safely so no one (and nothing) gets hurt. The hardness of wooden blocks is also an advantage though as the noise they make when they topple over is great fun!
Cardboard Blocks
Cardboard blocks can also provide hours of fun for the children in your life. Because they are made of lightweight corrugated cardboard no one gets hurt when they tumble. But, even though cardboard blocks are lightweight, they are also very sturdy and will last for years.
Cardboard blocks generally come in bright (non-toxic) colors, which can help children learn color recognition. Many cardboard block kits double as "unit blocks" which means they can used to teach basic math skills as well.
Most cardboard block sets are comprised of larger sized blocks. This, coupled with their lightweight construction makes them great for building structures kids can actually play in, and crash into!
Foam Blocks
Foam blocks come in all shapes and sizes from kits with blocks that are a great size for smaller buildings like a castle for their favorite doll, to large, full scale fort building blocks. All are soft, durable, and perfect for hours and hours of enjoyment.
Foam blocks have somewhat of a "squishy" texture to them and are easily cleaned with soap and water. They are also very colorful and come in a wide variety of geometric shapes which allows children to learn about the different types of shapes and makes building with foam blocks a neat and educational challenge.
