They may not realize it then, but cosmetics are amongst the leading causes of acne and can aggravate an acne outbreak, even if they haven’t caused it.

During adolescence, a person’s body undergoes a number of hormonal changes that lead to deposits of oil in the pores of the skin. These oily pores attract dirt, grime and dust from the atmosphere and get clogged up, which then leads to acne, spots, pimples, blemishes, whiteheads and blackheads. The use of cosmetics in this case is similar to exposure to atmospheric pollutants. They too clog up the pores on the surface of the skin and can lead to acne.

Cosmetics that contain shimmering facial colors usually contain mineral called mica that is known to cause skin irritations and can also clog pores of your skin. There are also other additives present in the coloring of cosmetics like coal tar derivatives, carmine and heavy cream that can also clog skin pores and cause irritation. It is also important to remember that the more the shine a lipstick has, the more is the comedogenic content in it and more is the likelihood that it will clog your pores. Also be wary of eye creams can contain heavy amounts of moisturizers compared to regular creams and lotions. They pose a risk of clogging pores in the surrounding facial areas.

If you have to use cosmetics, use products that are labeled non-comedogenic or oil-free. Also, whenever you use cosmetics, ensure that you clean it off thoroughly before going to bed. If left overnight, chances are very high that cosmetics will clog your pores. Cleansing is always the first step as for acne treatments. It prepares the skin to receive the additional products that your acne system delivers such as a toner and a protection or repairing lotion. Be sure to use a good cleanser, and remove all your makeup before applying your acne treatment.

Cosmetics are not the only cause of acne. There are many other pollutants that our skin has to face each day. IF all these external impurities can be related to acne, there are also some internal toxins inside our body that can lead to acne. Drinking water throughout the day eliminates the toxins. Another internal factor, which is a main acne factor, is hormonal imbalance. This is what we experience when we are teens with puberty, adult women also go through many hormonal changes during their lives. There are now some acne supplements on the market that help to control and restore hormonal balance inside the body to prevent acne.
