Cold Sore Symptoms

Flu season has officially closed its fist around us and with the weather being sporadic form day to day; it is very easy to succumb to a cold which could eventually lead to the flu.  There are several flu related maladies which may cross our paths during the cold season.  Of the more annoying nature are cold sores.  Cold sore symptoms are very easy to identify.

A cold sore is sometimes known as a fever blister.  It is identified as a red, swollen bump that is found on the lip and around the mouth.  They can be very painful and the course they run could last up to two weeks.  These are the most noticeable symptoms that may accompany a cold sore.  However, there are others which are less familiar to victims.    
     
Flu-like symptoms can accompany the fever blister.  For a person who has never had a run-in with a fever blister, swelling of the lymph nodes in or around the neck and throat may occur.  For people who deal with fever blisters more often may not have this problem.  Another side effect may occur in the gums, causing them to become itchy, swollen and a very bright red.
     
The virus that causes cold sores is the herpes simplex virus.  It is usually contracted through an opening or break in the skin, typically near the mouth.  Once contracted they virus is unable to be cured.  People who have problems with cold sores can only stop outbreaks from occurring and treating outbreaks so they are minor.
    
Cold sores will usually mend themselves within a few days of the initial outbreak.  There a number of treatments that will usually speed up the healing process, while at the same time they can ease the pain as well.  Topical ointments and creams can be purchased at your local drugstore.  These are very useful in expediting the healing process.  There are also medications which can be taken orally for people who suffer continuous outbreaks that may be prescribed by a local doctor.
