Eclampsia is the event of seizures (convulsions) in a pregnant woman. The seizures are different to brain conditions and commonly happen after the 20th week of pregnancy.
Eclampsia is a difficult situation of pregnancy and is characterised by convulsions. Eclampsia is not the cause of seizures that occur during the first trimester (term of three months) or well into the postpartum period. Eclampsia can cause coma and flat death of the mother and baby and can happen before, during or after childbirth. It is difficult to prognosticate which women with preeclampsia will go on to have seizures. Women with very high blood pressure, headaches, vision changes, or abnormal blood tests have severe preeclampsia and are at high risk for seizures.
Eclampsia accounts for nearly 50,000 maternal deaths worldwide Yearlly. Eclampsia make difficult approximately 0.05-0.2% of all pregnancies. Eclampsia follows preeclampsia, a grave complication of pregnancy marked by high blood pressure, weight gain, and protein in the urine. There are many causes of eclampsia involve person's genes, diet, blood vessels, and neurological factors may play a role. Some researchers distrust poor nutrition, high body fat, or insufficient blood flow to the uterus as possible causes.
The treatment of seizures in eclampsia includes of prevention of convulsion , manage the blood pressure and delivery of fetus. Medication to decrease blood pressure may be an option for a while if pre-eclampsia is not too severe. Magnesium sulfate is a safe drug for both the mother and the baby. Patients with eclampsia should have nothing by mouth until medically steady. During a seizure, maintaining the patient's airway and being careful to help avoid aspiration of stomach contents is important. Rest is often advised, although there is little evidence that this makes much difference.
